In The Wild Update, Minecraft introduced the Ancient City, a new setting filled with the ruins of a bygone age. So to launch it, we brought a real ancient ruin into the game. Partnering with the National Trust, we created a campaign that not only reignited fans' excitement for Minecraft, but one of the UK's most historic castles.
SABRE Awards – Winner (Consumer Marketing), Cresta – Bronze, Adforum – Bronze, Gerety – 2x Shortlist.
Working with Minecraft specialists Blockbuilders, we used GPS drone data to construct a model of the ruin, exactly as it stands today. This became the base in our build challenge, where we tasked Minecraft fans with reimagining Corfe Castle as it once was.
To inspire our audience builds, we enlisted the help of Minecraft creator Grian and historian Alice Loxton to recreate the castle as it would have stood in its spectacular past. The content film has racked up more than 1.1million YouTube views.
We teamed up Minecraft creator Grian and TikTok historian Alice Loxton to recreate Dorset's legendary Corfe Castle in the world of the game.
1million+ views
Our Corfe Castle server provided the perfect canvas for our fans’ creativity. Over the course of the campaign, they built 1905 castles, with an average playtime of 8 hours, 48 minutes. The total playtime was an incredible 1 month, 1 day, 16 hours and 26 minutes.
And after bringing Corfe Castle to Minecraft, we brought Minecraft to the castle. Xbox consoles gave visitors the chance to digitally reconstruct the castle, from the site of the ruin itself.
